Justin Morrow and Eric Lichaj may have done enough to keep their places in the USA team at full-back, but Matt Hedges is likely to be replaced by Matt Miazga or Matt Besler.

Otherwise, Bruce Arena may be tempted to stick with largely the same lineup for the first time at this tournament.

Potential starting XI: Howard; Lichaj, Gonzalez, Besler, Morrow; Arriola, Nagbe, Bradley, Zardes; Dempsey, Altidore.

Costa Rica lost four of their best players after the group stage, with Bryan Oviedo, Joel Campbell and Cristian Gamboa returning to Europe for pre-season and Johan Venegas sent back to Minnesota United after suffering a knee injury.

In their place, Vancouver Whitecaps defender Kendall Waston has been called up along with Jose Leiton, Jhamir Ordain and Jimmy Marin, all of whom play for Herediano. Leiton and Marin are uncapped.

Potential starting XI: Pemberton; Salvatierra, Gonzalez, Waston, Calvo; Acosta; Ruiz, Guzman, Tejeda, Ramirez; Urena.

We are now moving into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the competition favorites facing each other. Costa Rica have managed to keep three clean sheets from four matches so far, which gives them high hopes to qualify in the final and why not to win the trophy. They topped their group after beating Honduras and French Guiana and securing a draw with Canada and qualified in the semifinals after winning a tough contest 1-0 against Panama (own goal). Playing against the USA, the hosts and tournament favorite, is the biggest test for Los Ticos. Their main striker Joel Campbell will not be available for this match after getting injured in the group stage match against Canada. Costa Rica’s main weapon is their defense having the best defense in the tournament with just 1 goal conceded in four fixtures.

As expected the USMNT defeated El Salvador 2-0 with a reinforced line in the quarter finals and they are looking very determined to win and regain the trophy. The victory against El Salvador was not a walk in the park for the USA, the match being closer than the result suggests. They should radically improve their entire game in the next match otherwise they risk getting knocked-out from the competition. The USMNT have the best attack of the tournament with 9 goals scored in 4 matches.

The USMNT have had some ups and downs so far in the competition but for the quarter finals, Bruce Arena was able to call up some of his main stars – Tim Howard, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey. This clever move brings more quality inside the team, more experience as well as more stability in all the fields. Dempsey has scored three goals in his last six mutual encounters against Costa Rica. Lost Ticos have had an incredible record against the USMNT in recent years winning three of their last four encounters. These two sides have met twice in 2016 with both matches ending with a home win. Their last head-to-head saw Costa Rica trash the USA 4-0 in the World Cup Qualifiers.

USA are favorites to win this match being priced at +100 with Bet365 to win the match in 90’. Lost Ticos are the underdogs being priced at +310 with BetVictor. The match should be closer than the odds suggest. We might see extra-time and why not penalty shootout. Both teams have score in all their four Gold Cup matches and we expect both to contribute on the scoreboard.
