Sweden Under-21 vs England Under-21 betting tips

England Under-21s hope to follow the example of the World Cup-winning age group just below them when they begin their UEFA Under-21 Championship campaign in Poland.
Aidy Boothroyd’s side start their Group A fixtures against the defending champions, hoping to win the pool to be assured of a semi-final place or, alternatively, be the best of the three runners-up. The other teams in this group are hosts Poland and Slovakia.
The Young Lions will be all too aware that Paul Simpson’s under-20 side lifted the World Cup for their age group last weekend and therefore have plenty to live up to – from an English perspective, the hope is that it will inspire them rather than increase the pressure and expectation.
There was little wrong with the way England qualified for this 12-team tournament because they topped their table with six wins and two draws from their eight matches, scoring freely at home and keeping things tight on their travels.
The worry is that, rather like their senior counterparts, once they get to the finals England fail to deliver and they have exited at the group stage in the last three editions of this competition since reaching the final and losing to Germany in 2009.
Two years ago, they also met Sweden in the group stage and won 1-0 after an opening defeat to Portugal, but then went down 3-1 against Italy to bow out. Instead, it was Sweden that advanced with the Portuguese whom they met again in the final and prevailed on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
And the Scandinavians should be a big threat again for they were unbeaten in a qualifying group that also contained Spain and Croatia, conceding only seven goals in their 10 matches.
With full internationals such as Southampton duo Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse in the squad, England are odds-on favourites to start with a win but Sweden’s impressive record makes the draw a more appealing bet.

Sweden Under-21 vs England Under-21 stats

  • England have played Sweden nine times at under-21 level and never lost, winning five and drawing the other four
  • Four of those five England victories included a clean sheet
  • All of the four stalemates were score draws

As for Sweden, playmaker Kristoffer Olsson and mooted Gunners target Joel Osoro will be among the key figures for this vital Group A opener.
