Notes: Ryan Moore is playing for the first time since the Memorial because of a shoulder injury that kept him out of the U.S. Open. … Jordan Spieth, who won the tournament in 2013 and 2015, is not playing for the second straight year. He did not defend last year because it was the same week as the Olympics and he turned down his spot in Rio. … The purse is the smallest on the PGA Tour for events that offer full FedEx Cup points. … Schauffele is the fourth rookie to win on the PGA Tour this year. The others were Cody Gribble (Sanderson Farms), Mackenzie Hughes (RSM Classic) and Wesley Bryan (RBC Heritage). … Paul Goydos shot a 59 in the first round in 2010, only one shot better than Steve Stricker, who went on to win the tournament. … Stricker, a three-time Deere winner, is playing for the 16th time. … The British Open is holding one spot for the leading player among the top five who is not already exempt.
