French Open: Men’s draw

The draw to determine first-round matches for the men’s 2017 French Open took place on Friday, May 26, after the qualifying rounds finished Thursday and two days before the tournament starts. Higher-ranked players are seeded to ensure they will not face each other until the later stages of the tournament.

Roger Federer announced he will skip the French Open to focus on the grass and hard courts he’ll see at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. This will be the first year since 1998 Federer will not play in any tour event on clay.

Nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal is the early favorite to beat 2016 winner Novak Djokovic. Nadal, who dominates competition on a clay court, is looking for his 15th Grand Slam title.

Nadal faces top competition from Djokovic, who has finished the French Open as champion or runner up in four of the last five years. However, both Nadal and Djokovic have struggled against 23-year-old Dominic Thiem, who holds the spot as the third favorite. Thiem has the physical and mental ability to compete and beat Nadal as he ended Nadal’s 17-match winning streak during the quarterfinals on clay in Rome.

The men’s and women’s draws for the 2017 French Open have been made official, and there will be some interesting and intriguing matches that could unfold over the next fortnight.

We start with the men’s draw, where last year’s finalists Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are on opposite sides of the draw, meaning they cannot face each other until the final at the earliest.

Murray will face Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in his first match, after which he could face Juan Martin del Potro and Tomas Berdych in the third and fourth rounds respectively.

This will be del Potro’s first appearance at Roland Garros since 2012, when he went down to Roger Federer in the quarter-finals after having led by two sets to love. He missed the 2013 tournament due to illness, and was absent from the past three tournaments due to a wrist injury.

French Open: Women’s draw

The draws to determine first-round matches for the women’s 2017 French Open took place on Friday, May 26, after the qualifying rounds finished Thursday and two days before the tournament starts. Higher-ranked players will be seeded to ensure that they will not face each other until the later stages of the tournament.

Serena Williams defeated older sister Venus Williams in the Australian Open to win her record 23rd Grand Slam title before announcing she was pregnant.

Maria Sharapova, a two-time French Open champion, will also be absent at Roland Garros after the French Tennis Federation denied her a wild-card spot. Sharapova returned to tour in April after a 15-month suspension for a doping violation.

Without Williams and Sharapova, the women’s field is wide open. Favorites to win include Simona Halep, Garbine Murguruza and Elina Svitolina. Although Halep’s performance is unpredictable after a torn ankle ligament, she will be looking to avenge her Italian Open finals loss against Svitolina to break through with her first grand slam win.

Prize money: Total prize fund is nearly €36 million (about $40 million), a 12 percent increase from 2016, with €2.1 million (about $2.35 million) each for the men’s and women’s singles champions.
