The Golden State Warriors have been here before. Heading into Game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals Monday night, Stephen Curry and Co. have a 3-1 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers, returning home with a chance to win the title.
A year ago, the Cavs stole Game 5 at Oracle Arena in what was the start of the greatest comeback in league history. LeBron James led the way as Cleveland defied the odds and proved every prediction wrong, defeating what many thought was the best team of all time. A different set of circumstances surrounds this year’s series, however, and the defending champs will be hard-pressed to do the impossible again.
All of one year ago, the Golden State Warriors, coming off a historic regular season, held the same advantage against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The general consensus seemed simple at the time: LeBron James and the Cavaliers would fight with pride and maybe take another game or two before a graceful bow out of contention and into a question-riddled offseason.
With the win, the Cavaliers forced a Game 5 against the Warriors at Oracle Arena in Oakland on Monday night.
LeBron James set an NBA Finals record with his ninth triple-double, and the Cleveland Cavaliers had the highest-scoring first half ever in the Finals while beating the Golden State Warriors 137-116 in Game 4 to stave off elimination on Friday night.
Much like the first half, the Cavaliers kept shooting well from three-point range, knocking down seven of their 11 looks from beyond the arc in the third quarter, led by a pair of triples from Love, who buried two of his three looks from deep in the period. “They won a championship, and past year it was the greatest regular-season team we had played, probably one of the best postseason teams that everybody’s ever seen as well, but we were just able to overcome that”. Zaza Pachulia struck Iman Shumpert in the groin.
The Cavs almost hung 50 on the Warriors in the opening period, and would’ve done it had James not missed the front end of two free throws with 2.9 seconds left. It forces a Game 5 in the best-of-seven series and denies the Warriors – who lead the series 3-1 – the chance to become the first team in National Basketball Association history to go undefeated throughout the playoffs. And it can’t hurt the Browns to try and get a little of the winning magic off the defending champs. There have been two one-loss champions: the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers (15-1) and 1983 Philadelphia 76ers (12-1). He had his National Basketball Association record ninth triple double with 31 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds.
One victory left for the Golden State Warriors to claim another title. “I’m pretty sure Draymond won’t get suspended for Game 5”. This technical however was given to Warriors coach Steve Kerr, and Green remained in the game.
