HAMILTON, Bermuda — Many a well-financed maritime expedition has come to grief through the centuries in the treacherous, deep blue waters off Bermuda.

Oracle Team USA joined that list on Monday, as Emirates Team New Zealand and its crew of young newcomers finished off a surprisingly lopsided 7-1 victory to reclaim the America’s Cup after a 14-year wait. The final race was a rout, with New Zealand trailing at the first mark but dominating after that and finishing 55 seconds ahead of the American team.

It was a day of redemption for the Kiwis, who blew a seemingly insurmountable 8-1 lead against Oracle in the last America’s Cup, in 2013, by losing eight consecutive races in San Francisco.

“A few years ago, it was absolutely brutal for the team, and it was a hard pill to swallow,” said Team New Zealand’s skipper, Glenn Ashby, who is the only member of the losing 2013 Kiwi team on this year’s crew. “For the sailors and all the other guys who are with the team, it is a great redemption, and I guess a relief to right the wrongs of the last campaign. We obviously learned a lot from that campaign, and we put our best foot forward as best we could.”

Dan Barnett, Chief Commercial Officer of the America’s Cup said: “We are delighted that we have added Sport 24 to our impressive roster of broadcast partners and are sure that viewers of their channel will be glued to the action this summer. There will be thousands of people traveling to Bermuda on cruise ships and by plane, so this agreement is particularly relevant for the 35th America’s Cup.
